CHAPTER 10

“What are you?” Marco asked dismissively, “a private investigator or something?”

Gregory’s request to see the video of the kitchen moments before Diego’s death had irritated Marco.

“I’m just trying to get an answer as to what happened to Diego,” Gregory said. “He was too athletic to have a fall like that on his own. If you have nothing to hide, I don’t see why you wouldn’t give me a look at that footage.”

“Because it’s property of the restaurant, and you’re not an investigator.”

“That’s true,” Gregory smiled. “But I am a guy with a lot of followers who would be completely willing to drag your name through the mud as the guy who refused to help investigate an employee’s death. And for what it’s worth, I’ve solved a few murder investigations in the past. I kind of have a brain for this stuff.”

“Then why are you a food critic?” Marco hissed.

“I’m an internet influencer,” Gregory corrected him. “I help people who are worthy of help by driving copious amounts of traffic their way. And as you pointed out earlier, I can also have the opposite effect. So, how about that video footage?”

Marco thought about it for a moment and was helped along in his decision when Lucia growled from her seat near the front door, “Let him see the darn tape. There’s not going to be anything on it.”

Sighing, Marco snarled, “Follow me.”

Gregory followed Marco into a small office just past the kitchen door. On his way past, he peered inside, thinking that if he could get in there and look around, he might be able to put the pieces together.

One thing at a time, he cautioned himself.

They arrived in Marco’s office, which smelled of cigarette smoke and cheap cologne.

Marco took a seat in a beaten-up office chair and rolled it forward toward a desk that looked like it had seen better days. He flipped up a laptop and clicked around for a minute.

Then he brought up a video of Diego climbing up the ladder and falling backward.

“See,” Marco said. “It was an accident. Nobody was even around him.”

Sure enough, no one had been around Diego when he’d fallen. The contents that had landed on him were all from the shelf that he pulled over onto himself in an effort to stop his fall. The tiramisu that had ended up on the floor next to him was on the nearby prep table and had been knocked off when Diego’s head bounced off of it.

That explained the blood coming from his head and the mess all around him.

Gregory had seen it with his own eyes. Diego had just fallen. It looked like it was an accident, after all. Yet there was something about the fall that didn’t sit right. Diego’s foot had moved dramatically. How had that happened?

“Can you play that back?”

Marco huffed. “It’s hard enough seeing one of my employees fall to their death once. Do you really need to see it again?”

“Yes,” Gregory tipped his head forward. “It looks like
